Let’s Eat Healthy! Can I Afford That….?

Have you ever been in the grocery store, walking through the produce section? And in your head your thinking, “I should really buy more fruits and veggies for the kids. But they’re so darn expensive!” Yeah, I do that every week. Then I go to the farmers market, which lots of other eating healthy on a budget sites tell you to do…. Well, I guess I live in an area that doesn’t have a lot of local growers, because the farmer’s market is even more expensive than the grocery store! So here I sit, trying to figure out how to save money on fresh produce.

I’ve often heard about this elusive CSA box. Maybe they’re available in your area, but until yesterday in spite of searching and searching there simply was not a box available anywhere in my area. Insert sad face 😦 lol. Well, yesterday, while I was browsing my local farmer’s market facebook page I came across something that totally excited me! Should I share???

Ok, ok I will. I stumbled across this, it’s a website that allows you to pick ahead of time what you pick up at your local farmer’s market! I know, exciting right?! Here’s what even better, one if the local growers offers a CSA bag, YAY! So I did a bit more research to see what all was included in their bag.

So here is the list of what the CSA bag included last week, “turnips, lots cucumber, mustard greens, yellow squash, peppers sweet and hot, honey, eggs, bread, basil and some eggplant”. That’s taken directly from their website. That’s a lot in my book for just $25, and if you live closer and can pick up in Abita Springs then it’s only $20! Go get your bundle this weekend!!!

Back for the Weekend

Ok so I’m back. Like many stay at home moms (SAHM) I only get a semi-sorta break when my hubs is home on the weekend. By that I mean I get to go to the grocery store without kids! Woot woot, lol. But this weekend there is another fun, free family event we’re planning on going to, yay!

The annual dairy fest is held about an hour from our town, so we are going of course. According to their website there’s a lot of fun stuff to look forward to! Some of the things included are; a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, a sorghum maze and tours of the dairy barn and there’s so much more! The fest this year is on Sat, Oct 3 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Free, entry! Free tours! Free parking! Concessions start at just $1 and only go to $6. Talk about a cheap, fun way to entertain kids for an aftrenoon. Oh and did I mention, the weather is supposed to be a high of 78 and sunny! Double win!

Let’s go meet some cows 😀

Weekend Fun!!

I don’t know about you, but I hate spending $100 to take my family out for the day, and that doesn’t even include food or gas to where we’re going. I recently was able to take advantage of the $2 admission to the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans and my kids loved it!  Ah who am I kidding, I loved it too!  The zoo is probably one of my all time favorite outings for a pretty day, and it was beautiful!

But now N is asking when we are going again, well the zoo admission normally its $13 for kids and $18 for adult, too much!  So I started searching out my next outing for next to nothing.  And I found an awesome deal that I’m really excited to share with you.

Saturday, Sept. 26 is the annual Museum Day Live!  That means free entry to participating museums.  In my area that includes the Louisiana Children’s Museum, the Audubon Insectarium and several others.  The catch is this, you must go online and reserve and print of save your tickets to your smart phone first, go here to reserve you tickets. I got mine yesterday and we’re looking forward to a nice day in the city practically free.  The only thing we’ll have to pay for is gas, probably parking and anything we want to eat, can you say bring snacks!
